BioMMED will be hosting a short presentation highlighting the Nano eNabler System by BioForce Nanosciences.

The field applications specialist for BioForce Nanosciences, Inc. will be here today, August 25 to give a short presentation on their Nano eNabler™ system. The presesntation will be held at 11am in Room 3511 (PBS Conference Room).

The Nano eNabler system is able to consistently make depositions of protein (or nucleic acids, etchants, etc.) from 1.5 µm to 60 µm and offers an edge over microcontact printing in its flexibility and multiplexing capabilities. It has an edge over dip pen nanolithography as well, in that deposition of materials is not diffusion limited.

Using this system, one can change deposition size, location and pitch on the fly. Additionally, one is able to interlace separate proteins in the same pattern without cross-contamination. In house, they are able to employ the Nano eNabler™ to pattern ultra-miniaturized arrays for cytokine and virus detection as well as indexing NIH3T3, MDCK, PC12, NG108, and HeLA H1 cells utilizing various ECM's and various surfaces.

If you would like to discuss potential application of this system to your research, please attend the presentation or contact Thaya at 8-9708 for more information.

Dr. Abolghasem Baghian
1949-2008

Dr. Abolghasem Baghian received his BS degree in Medical Technology from the University of Tehran, Iran in 1974, a MS degree in Microbiology from Southeastern Louisiana University, Hammond, LA in 1981 and a PhD degree in Microbiology and Immunology from Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ in 1985.  He joined the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Parasitology as a postdoctoral fellow in 1986 receiving advanced training in Chlamydia and herpesvirus research. In recognition of his special teaching and research skills, he was promoted to Instructor in 1991 and to Research Assistant Professor in 2001. Dr. Baghian has authored more than 30 peer-reviewed publications and has presented research findings to national and international conferences. He was highly recognized for his skillful utilization of animal models for human disease and his immunological and molecular expertise.  Most importantly, he was highly recognized for his ability to teach undergraduate and graduate students laboratory techniques and for supporting and promoting minority students from Southern University and elsewhere.

Dr. Baghian possessed a unique personality characterized by willingness to help others at great lengths. He earned the reputation of being one of the nicest people around the School of Veterinary Medicine for his non-confrontational approach to solving problems, his kindness and calming presence.  The LSU Division of Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine (BioMMED) at the School of Veterinary Medicine, the Department of Pathobiological Sciences, the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine and LSU, Baton Rouge have lost a valuable faculty member, researcher and teacher. The many students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty that have received his help over the years will deeply miss him.

Dr. Baghian is survived by his wife Masi, his two sons Ali and Salman and his daughter  Sepidah. A special memorial for Dr. Baghian was held at the Lod Cook Conference Center on July 19th, 2008, 5:00-7:30 pm.

We at BioMMED feel extremely lucky that we had the opportunity to spend time with Dr. Baghian during his short time with us. We are all better people because of him.

Au revoir, Baghian.
