BioMMED will be hosting a seminar next week, October 14, on “The Science of Western Blotting”. The seminar will be from 1:30-2:30pm in Room 3511 of the School of Veterinary Medicine. Representatives from Millipore and ThermoFisher Scientific will present information relating to western blots and introduce us to the SNAP id system. Topics to be discussed include:

“Western Blotting Standard Methods, Protocol Optimization”

“Western Blotting: Advanced Techniques and Troubleshooting”

“Western Blotting in a SNAP. Immunodetection in 30 minutes”

Unlike conventional Western blotting, where diffusion is the primary means of reagent transport, the SNAP i.d. system applies a vacuum to actively drive reagents through the membrane. This novel method allows you to optimize your blotting conditions in record time for maximum results.

An RSVP reply to thaya@lsu.edu would be appreciated to accurately plan for printed material and refreshments. Contact Thaya (578-9708) with any questions.

Dr. K. Gus Kousoulas, Professor and Director at LSU School of Veterinary Medicine Division of BioMMED, gave a seminar titled “A Maverick View of Grantsmanship” on Thursday, October 2, 2008 at noon. The presentation was followed by a panel discussion conducted via the Access Grid, with nine participating sites in Louisiana, to three groups of junior investigators funded by NCRR: the INBRE grant housed at LSU, the LSU-Tulane COBRE Center for Experimental Infectious Disease Research, and the COBRE Mentoring Oral Health Research in Louisiana at the LSUHSC School of Dentistry.

Below are links to the seminar slides and to the seminar flyer in PDF format.

The terms "western" and "northern" are molecular biology jokes that play on the term southern blot. The first blots were with DNA, and since they were done by Ed Southern, they came to be known as Southerns. Patricia Thomas, inventor of the RNA blot, which became known as a "northern", actually didn't use the term. To carry the joke further, one can find reference in the literature to "southwesterns" (Protein-DNA interactions) and "farwesterns" (Protein-Protein interactions). as per Wikipedia
