Chesebro is an expert in mechanisms of pathogenesis and host defense mechanisms involved in persistent viral diseases and prion diseases. Specific areas of his work include transmissible spongiform encephalopathies or prion diseases of various species, as well as neuropathogenesis induced by HIV and murine retroviruses. He has received the 1986 Public Health Service Meritorious Service Medal and the 1990 Public Health Service Distinguished Service Medal.
