 School of Veterinary Medicine Professor Receives $1.8 Million Continuation to NIH Grant

K. Gus kousoulas, professor of virology and biotechnology and director of the Division of Biotechnology & Molecular Medicine at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, has been awarded a five-year, approximately $1.8 million competitive-continuation to his National Institutes of Health research program on the “Genetics and Functions of Herpes Simplex Virus Type-1 Glycoproteins” by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Kousoulas serves as the director of the Center for Biomedical Research Excellence in Experimental Infectious Disease Research at LSU, a $10 million research program administered by BIOMMED that funds junior investigators at LSU and the Tulane National Primate Research Center. Also, Kousoulas serves as the director of the Molecular/Cell Biology Core of the recently funded Idea Network for Biomedical Research Excellence program grant that funds junior investigators and students at Louisiana-based institutions. The principal investigator is Harold Silverman, vice chancellor of Research & Graduate Studies, and the grant provides approximately $17 million over five years.
